A performance at Cartier’s Bold & Fearless celebration of the Santos de Cartier watch

Cartier transformed San Francisco’s Pier 48 into a multipurpose nightclub/lecture venue/vibrant Social Lab for three dramatic days in early April for its annual International Party, celebrating creativity, bold ideas and the elegant new Santos watch.

The think-tank, thunderous concert and launch of the Santos de Cartier timepiece, and the Cartier International Party were hosted by President and CEO Cartier North America Mercedes Abramo and International Marketing and Communication Director Arnaud Carrez.

Cartier engaged leading international party planner, art director and event designer Alexandre de Betak and his Bureau Betak teams to design the gala at Pier 48 on Thursday, April 5. The handsome, loft-like venue—a raw neoclassical former cargo warehouse with sky-lit open beams—was transformed into the most glamorous and sometimes hallucinatory Paris-style nightclub, dance party, social media hotspot, lecture center and culinary scene.

Cartier’s celeb guests, who flew in from 20 countries, included Lily Collins, Idris Elba, Freida Pinto, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jeremy Renner, Caroline Issa, Bianca Brandolini, Sofia Boutella, Mélanie Laurent, Sienna Miller, Aaron Paul and Chloë Sevigny.

At Pier 48, Cartier hosted by-invitation-only Social Labs of pioneering conversations with global visionaries, creatives and innovators—the “Santos” men and women of our day. Speakers included Sofia Coppola, Freida Pinto, David LaChapelle, Neville Wakefield, Larry Jackson, Yves Béhar, Laird Hamilton and Elba.

Chef Daniel de la Falaise flew in from Paris to direct the culinary style and menus for the party, and orchestrated two exquisite private lunches, with Alice Waters acting at one point as his sous-chef. Winemaker Sean Thackrey designed the wine list.

San Francisco gala guests included Abigail Turin and Jon Gans, Vanessa Getty, Allison Speer, Anne-Sophie Deneve, Alex Chases, Marybeth Shimmon, Carolyn Chang, Tatiana Sorokko, Sabrina Buell and Yves Béhar, Todd Traina, Trevor Traina, Molly de La Falaise and Katya Sorokko.

Attendeees enjoyed vivid light shows, and dance-inducing performances by Phoenix, Jamie XX, Nonotak, Hot Chip and Wade Crescent. Miller and Derek Blasberg danced into the night, as fog swirled around the pier and turned the LED-lit Bay Bridge into a dreamy, glittering reflection over the bay.
