Sexy Beast + Planned Parenthood
The notion of giving—the seductive, avant-garde type—was top of mind as the L.A. art scene enveloped The Theatre at Ace Hotel on Saturday, September 10 for “Sexy Beast.” Planned Parenthood—in tandem with Eliah Perona and Davida Nemeroff and Mieke Marple of Night Gallery—hosted an auction and quirky fête full of notables like Rose McGowan and Alex Israel, which was kicked off by an otherworldly spectacle by performance trio WIFE. Comedian Andy Richter then took the stage in a surprisingly sentimental dialogue introducing the evening’s cause and the its hostess, CEO of Planned Parenthood, Sue Dunlap. After a powerful speech and award bequeathed to the Emmy-nominated director of Trapped, Dawn Porter—the bidding festivities began. Online art darling Paddle8 held a vigorous presence with paddles designed by Math Bass flying. Phone bidders chimed in and an all-out battle began for Sterling Ruby’s subtly vibrant SHDW. YP. OBG. Other works by Paul McCarthy and Sterling Ruby went home with charitable new owners dizzied by tunes spun by DJ Rashida, who hit the turntables into the night.
