David Hockney’s pool portraits, Ansel Adams’ images of the John Muir Trail, and even Richard Diebenkorn’s urban landscapes emphasize California’s outdoor beauty, the very tableaus that inspire residents to lace up running shoes, paddle into oncoming waves, or sprint for an impossible-to-hit volley. Our proclivity for playing in the Golden State’s great outdoors has been well-documented, but the gear worn for such endeavors hasn’t always complimented the wearer or her chosen sport. Now that Tory Burch has is launching her activewear line at Barneys New York in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, athletes from La Jolla to Marin will have access to high tech fabrics in classic designs tailored for running, studio classes, tennis, golf, or swimming. Burch even created Coming and Going, a collection to be worn après workout, complete with a welcome dose of street style chic.
