California Beauty: Rodarte Fall 2016
Masses of metal Art Nouveau flowers played a starring role in the Rodarte fall 2016 collection sent down a New York runway by Laura and Kate Mulleavy during fashion week. The posies adorning hair, clipped onto ears, and affixed to wrists lent the show, marking the line’s 10th anniversary, an idyllic quality. Makeup artist James Kaliardos drew on that notion as he prepped models for the show using NARS Cosmetics.“The makeup look is beautifully romantic, with a contrast of deep color,” he says. Dresses made from yards of lace and skirts awash in ruffles were tempered by uniformly dark lips painted precisely on each model’s face, a bold antidote the collection’s dreamy undercurrents inspired by a trip to Berkeley—where both siblings attended college—that included a stop at Caffe Trieste on San Pablo Avenue, a haven for songwriters and creatives alike. The soundtrack, including Judy Collins’ cover of of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” added just the right touch of melancholy.
