Perfect Pairing: Tory + Sport
Now that plates have been passed and kitchens cleared, California style setters are outward bound, taking up racquets and lacing running shoes for a day of fitness following Thanksgiving feasts. But Runyon hikers, Marin tennis mavens, and La Jolla trail runners won’t be reinvigorating their muscles dressed in old college sweatshirts and boxer shorts. Now that Tory Burch has launched a sport line, West Coast athletes are wearing striped cashmere sweaters, tech-knit polos, and wide-leg track pants for body-toning workouts. Burch, herself an accomplished tennis player, took inspiration from competitors like Björn Borg who wore fitted ensembles like those later evoked by characters in Wes Anderson’s nostalgic film, The Royal Tenenbaums. The collection includes elegant gear for swimmers, surfers, and a host of après-sport looks including neoprene pea coats and stretch poplin shirts. At last, a chance to remain chic while completing heart-pounding core work, serving up aces, or paddling out.
