Spotlight: Jane Buckingham

In 2004, when Jane Buckingham first published the original Modern Girl’s Guide to Life, the cover promised, among other things, that the pink-hued tome would teach readers “how to become an electronics wiz.” Flash forward 11 years, and the L.A.-based writer and television host has published a revised and updated Guide (William Morrow) instructing modern readers “how to avoid textastrophies.” Turns out that learning how to use technology is just the beginning. Figuring out when and where to employ text messages and Instagrams is the real challenge. Buckingham’s book includes all the practical advice found in the original about such varied topics as tipping ($5 to the hair washer, 20 percent to your stylist), home remedies (spicy sauce and hot mustards act like expectorants when you have a cold), and ordering scotch blends at a bar (stay in the $10 to $12 range). But the revised guide includes tips on how to take great Instagram shots (master the use of natural light, hold your head down to make your eyes appear bigger or up to make your nose smaller), send paper thank-you notes (the exception: send an email thank-you for a job interview in addition to a paper note), and explains why texting while talking at a party is “socially lethal” (put your phone away). There’s even a section instructing readers on how to stalk an ex online (leave no evidence). This time, Buckingham has covered all the bases.
