Scene and Heard: Karl Lagerfeld
“First of all, we must not forget that [Coco] Chanel got inspiration for the Chanel jacket here [in Salzburg, Austria] in the hotel of the Baron von Pantz where the livery boy had a jacket like this,” said Karl Lagerfeld on Tuesday, December 2, at Schloss Leopoldskron in Austria. The designer showed his Chanel Metiers d’Art Paris-Salzburg ’14 collection filled with such garments at the opulent 18th century castle overlooking lake Leopoldskroner Weiher. “She took the tweed and she put in the braid to make it completely different and made the jacket for women out of it,” he added. The clothes were rife with motifs found on dirndls and lederhosen, but Lagerfeld’s deft team embellished them with leather, mounds of feathers and intricate embroideries. Lagerfeld pointed out the number of feathers used to create portions of skirts, jackets and dresses. “There are so many feathers,” he said. “They’re like fur, like flying fur.” Short jackets, capes and mid-length coats all contained elements of Coco Chanel’s original vision. The California contingent in Austria for the presentation included Rooney Mara who joined guests including Lily Allen and Alice Dellal, Zhou Xun, and Nina Hoss. The presentation followed a screening of Reincarnation, a short film by Lagerfeld staring Pharrell Williams as a livery boy. Watching the film, one couldn’t help but wonder what would have resulted from a meeting between Williams and Chanel.
