Spotlight: Shinola
“We take inspiration from Donald Judd’s library in Marfa, Texas,” says Shinola Creative Director Daniel Caudill who just opened the Detroit-based brand’s first West Coast flagship in Silverlake. The cavernous space on Sunset Boulevard houses Motor City-made watches, bicycles, journals, shoe polish and other leather goods—in short, everything the locals need to journey from their houses to Cafe Stella. Caudill’s watches are a manifestation of the company’s made-in-America ethos. He notes that products are designed and built to last, including watches that are sold with a lifetime guarantee to keep ticking. We asked Caudill for a few gift suggestions for the guys names entered on holiday shopping lists and here’s what he suggested:
What would you get for the minimalist who has nothing and keeps nothing? Monogramming cards. They are simple, letterpress card sets featuring wood type alphabets. Perfect for sending a handwritten note.
What does the LA guy need? A good bike to the beat the traffic!
What should the LA guy stop wearing and toss? Anything that is poor quality.
