The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) launched its Wear LACMA spring 2014 collection on Tuesday, May 20, at the nonprofit’s Wilshire campus. Museum Director’s Circle members selected designers Anita Ko, George Esquivel, and Clare Vivier to create limited edition pieces inspired by the museum’s permanent collection. Ko created ear cuffs, a ring, and stud earrings that brought to mind Korea’s 19th-century Joseon period (1392–1910). Esquivel fashioned women’s sandals and also desert summer boots inspired by a portrait of an indigenous female wearing a huipil and holding a marigold, using Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez’s 1876 painting, Portrait of a Woman with a Marigold (Retrato de dama con Xuchil) as inspiration. Claire Vivier designed several items including a tote and a shirt riffing on an embroidered gentleman’s vest dating from the French Revolution that she found in LACMA’s costume and textiles collection. Guests got a first look at the new items available for purchase—items from Wear LACMA benefit museum programs—inside the museum’s store and at Net-a-Porter.
