Roses may be red, but the prettiest blooms often lack the sweet scent most commonly associated with them. Remedy the sensory deficiency by lighting a Byredo Burning Rose candle with top notes derived from the thorny bush’s delicate petals. Ben Gorham, the Stockholm-based fragrance house’s creative director drew inspiration from the smell of burning blooms for the new votive emblazoned with the letters XO, or what Gorham calls “simple slang graphics.” Though base notes include birch and ebony wood, he says the scent is not a direct reference to a particular natural phenomenon. “Actual burning roses are nothing I’ve smelled before, but rather the scent is the combination of two familiar memories,” he adds. “The burning aspect became a literal and figurative play on words,” Gorham confesses. So whether you’re singeing pictures of your ex with the flame, burning it like sage to cleanse a space, or setting the mood for an amorous evening, the small cylinder is sure to evoke a range of intense emotions. Or a simple limerick.
