Scene and Heard: Anne Hathaway
“Dr. Karlan asked if I’d like to have Annie come to the party tonight,” said Elyse Walker, introducing The Pink Party 2013 host Anne Hathaway on Saturday, October 19 at Hangar:8 inside the Santa Monica Airport. “I said, ‘Sure. Who’s Annie?” The event, now in its ninth year, benefits the Cedars-Sinai Women’s Cancer Program at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, where Beth Y. Karlan directs the women’s cancer program. Walker, who owns an eponymous women’s boutique in Pacific Palisades, founded the event to promote early detection after her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Taking the stage before a benefit fashion show with looks by Valentino, Lanvin, Matthew Williamson, and others, Hathaway noted that Walker has been gathering friends and family for the fundraiser since 2005, “to remind us that we’re all in this together.” Before she introduced Karlan, the actress, dressed in a J.Mendel mini dress, asked her husband Adam Shulman, “What’s the Yiddish word for female mensch?” Then, after noting that Karlan had successfully treated a close friend, Hathaway introduced Karlan as “My menschette.”
