LAXART, the art space and organization known for cultivating the talent of local creatives, is playing a game of telephone this summer to spread its message. The non-profit is collaborating with Cameron Helm, an L.A. native, on 10 limited edition hand-painted iPhone cases that will add a touch of Pollack to your pocket gadget. Helm, who studied painting at San Francisco Art Institute, combined his zeal for Abstract Expressionism and his interest in fashion to create shoes covered in splatter paint. Then, after gaining business knowledge and a sense of how to run a label during an internship at Rodarte, Helm expanded the shoe line into a hand-painted ready-to-wear collection called No Laughing Matter. As Helm says, “Everything looks better painted!” The distinct suit and shirt designs caught the attention of LAXART and communication lines opened. There are five cases for iPhone 4 or 4s and five for iPhone 5 devices, all of which cost $100. Now Helm’s work is sure to become the talk of the town.
