Guests at the de Young Museum in San Francisco took in a range of paintings that showed the artist’s move from abstract to figurative works at the opening of Richard Diebenkorn: The Berkeley Years, 1953-1966 on Thursday, June 20. As Fine Arts Museums Board President Dede Wilsey introduced patrons to the new director, Colin Bailey, fans of Diebenkorn had the chance to pose in front of a 1956 image taken of the artist in his Hillcrest studio. All the while, riffs from North Beach Jass Band could be heard during the cocktail party followed by a dinner in the museum tower—a nod to the Studio 13 Jass Band comprised of Diebenkorn’s cohorts who played together while the artist lived in Berkeley.
