Beach Blanket Babylon 40th Anniversary
“Good things last a long time,” said Governor Jerry Brown who made a toast to Steve Silver, the late creator of “Beach Blanket Babylon,” at the musical review’s 40th anniversary party held in San Francisco at city hall on Friday, June 6. Wilkes Bashford, founder of the Union Square department store that bears his name, and another close friend of Silver recalled the show’s early days. “When he was just 18, Steve used to shop at Wilkes Bashford,” recalled Bashford. “When we had clients visiting from out of town, or our Italian designers, we would take them to see his show. Now it’s in Jo’s hands, and the show is better than ever.” Jo Schuman Silver, who was married to Silver, took over producing the show after Silver’s death, and she was accompanied to Charlotte Shultz‘s penthouse party by Ann Getty. “Ann is my co-producer,” said Schuman. “She helps me write new material, has great ideas, and totally understands current events and how to translate these into a musical, witty, ironic, and fun format” Shultz also welcomed Joshua Robison, Lucy Jewett, Brenda Jewett, Ann Caen, Therese Post, Allison Spear, Nancy Bechtle, Pam and Richard Glogau, Beth Townsend, and all of the casts of “Beach Blanket Babylon” for the celebration.
