Barneys New York honored Leo Villareal—whose public art project, The Bay Lights, is illuminating the Bay Bridge—at a cocktail party held inside the O’Farrell Street department store in San Francisco on Thursday, November 7. Hosts, including Sloan and Roger Barnett, Sabrina Buell and Yves Behar, Ali Pincus, and Mimi Haas, gathered to toast the artist whose work includes 25,000 individually programmed LED lights displaying never-repeating patterns from dusk till dawn. The light sculpture, visible nightly for residents with a view of the bridge that connects downtown San Francisco with Oakland, can also be seen via a live stream online. Supporters and fans of the work have started a campaign to make the sculpture permanent through the non-profit Illuminate the Arts, and a portion of the evening’s sales went to the organization. Shine on.
