Spotlight: Veronica M. Toub
After years spent traveling and collecting objects in such far-flung regions as Kenya, Istanbul and Bali, fashion and jewelry designer Veronica M. Toub settled in L.A. and opened a Brentwood boutique last March. Now she’s found a way to stoke her wanderlust and still tend shop. She found a 1973 Airstream, gutted it and had it rebuilt to serve as a mobile version of her eponymous store. On Tuesday, June 4, she rolled the Airstream to a private evening of shopping in Brentwood, benefiting Africa Schoolhouse. Toub shares a short history of her new rolling boutique.

What inspired you to outfit an Airstream?
It had to be mobile and I loved the classic and post-modernist aspect of the Airstream. It was the perfect classic vintage vehicle. I knew I could retrofit it in the most modern and luxurious way by adding all the details necessary to create a sophisticated nomadic shopping experience for the 21st century.
What drew you to this one?
The Voyage Travel is a 31-foot, 1973 sovereign model. I researched Airstreams everywhere from the best dealers in the country and even searched through personal ads, and found this one in California. It took another six months (and some costly mistakes) to find Craig Dorsey, a renowned airstream renovator, the perfect person to do the work. The interior cabinetry is made from hand-tooled wood and water jet cut metal (nothing is standard size in an Airstream and everything must be custom made). One year later Voyage Travel was ready to hit the road.
Have you ever camped in a travel trailer?
I haven’t yet, but I plan to set up our next home with Airstreams instead of guest rooms as I now know how comfortable they can be. And I do plan to travel cross-country following the Airstream in an RV.
Where do you plan to take the mobile store?
The first stops are at private residences in L.A., by appointment only. Next will be charity events and special appearances at boutiques across the country. We’ll also be going to museums in L.A., N.Y., S.F., Miami’s Art Basel, Dallas, Las Vegas, and more to come.
If you had to pack one bag for a trip, what would you bring?
I will need two: one for winter and one for summer (I never know for how long I’ll be gone)! In addition to my Cire Trudon Spiritus Sancti candle, sketching pad, pencil, pink felt marker, iPad, Maia N. croc bag, and Fracas perfume, I would also pack the following: the Veronica caftan in ink blot with our Elih vest and the Arabella caftan. I would take my Darius bracelet (named for my son) in rose gold and the etched hex coin lariat because it converts to a bracelet, the zipper in rose gold with a diamond tab, and my hex pave diamond chain earrings.
