“I was inspired by the classic kidney shape of midcentury modern designs,” says Los Angeles–based furniture designer Michael Felix of his new u-shaped “Friends” stools. “I really wanted to create something I hadn’t seen before which was a fun challenge.”
The whimsical stools, handmade in Felix’s studio (situated inside a 1920s paint factory), are available in a variety of wood finishes and upholstery options such as Alexander Girard textiles. “I think it has an organic and modern sensibility of which California was at the forefront in the 1950s in architecture and design,” adds Felix, whose other creations range from leather poufs to Danish-inspired armchairs. “I envision the stools as extra seating in the living room or dining room. They’re easy to put aside stacked, or have in the space permanently.”
