Spotlight: Gucci Women’s Spring 2016 Collection
As rain drizzled outside, Gia Coppola and Nathalie Love donned vibrant outerwear with a decidedly vintage feel for Gucci‘s spring 2016 women’s presentation on Wednesday, September 23, held at Ex Scalo Farini in Milan. The cracked leather on Coppola’s silver bomber jacket from the Italian fashion house’s 2016 cruise collection lent a lived-in nonchalance to her look, and the purple satin Sylvia pumps gave the ensemble a playful quirky quality. The geeky-elegant juxtaposition of Coppola’s jacket, emerald lace skirt, and jewel-toned shoes is indicative of the new aesthetic that Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele has brought to the runway. The subtly vintage feel is achieved through pairings of ensembles and accessories and rather than through the overt cut or fabric of each item. Similarly, Love’s emerald geranium print quilted coat from the 2016 cruise collection looked as though it could have been a long lost treasure discovered in an attic, but the precise cut and shape belie such a provenance. And Love’s metallic leather GG Marmont pumps were the perfect counterpoint to the brightness of the lush flower print. How refreshing to see that Michele’s quirky and brave new world is here to stay.
