Spotlight: Curve Malibu
“Malibu is having a second or third wind right now so it felt like the right time for a Westside boutique,” says Nevena Borissova who just opened her newest Curve—her fifth—in the Malibu Country Mart. Borrisova opened her first shop stocking women’s designs and accessories in Los Angeles on Robertson in 1997, and she’s since launched locations in New York, Miami, and San Francisco, so this latest venture feels like a homecoming of sorts for her. Borissova says she envisioned weekend wear for Malibu, Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades that’s black and white and sandy, more sophisticated than the color-saturated bohemian looks made of jersey that are often associated with flip-flops and beach sand. “I want to bring a Christophe Lemaire and Tomas Maier sensibility to the area,” she says. The 1,500-square-foot space with cement floors and stark wire racks is filled with designs by Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, Cushnie Et Ochs, Thierry Mugler, and Acne. And this winter, Borissova will stock Lemaire’s collection, an exclusive to the Malibu location. The shop also serves as an incubator for Borissova’s new ideas. It includes an apothecary stocking Rodin oil as well as what Borissova calls “a little Curve mini,” a small rack of clothes for children with such lines as Zimmermann. “The weather, the air, I like the feeling here,” says Borrisova. Change is in the beach air.
