Spotlight: Coachella Style
Mid-set on Friday, April 11, during the first night of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, James Mercer of Broken Bells looked toward the horizon at what he called the “cursed orb,” and celebrated the sun’s decent behind the San Jacinto mountains. Guests who turned up for weekend one of the three-day festival had an equally contentious relationship with the star at the center of the solar system. Some, like Mia Moretti—who served as a DJ for numerous parties throughout the weekend—donned poolside looks reminiscent of the late 1950s buoyed by circular sunglasses. Others, including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Kate Bosworth, and Diplo covered up in bright whites that brought Charlie Gadekan’s Squared sculpture installed near the festival’s Gobi stage to mind. As the sand swirled and the sun rose and set on the Indio polo fields and assorted parties held in Thermal, Palm Springs, and La Quinta, an international coterie of style setters converged in the California desert.
