“I know mommy loves it if you’re a mess especially right around bath time,” said Jessica Alba to the toddlers snacking on mac & cheese and cake at the party celebrating The Honest Company’s second birthday, held at its Santa Monica headquarter on Thursday, January 30. Alba, who co-founded the home and baby care company with Christopher Gavigan, joined her daughter Honor and a host of other tots for the celebration. Face paint and hands covered in gobs of smeared food proved to be the most popular look for the evening. Alba mentioned her company’s origins as a dotcom startup and noted the wall displays created from reused shipping pallets for the party. “We brought the designs, the actual products, and the heart and soul of the company to the people who are sitting here daily and writing code.”

Gavigan—whose daughters Eve and Poppy (with wife Jessica Capshaw) repeatedly greeted their dad with a spirited, “hi” as he spoke about the company’s origins—noted that he and Alba started the project because they both have small children. “No one is your watchdog or friend at stores,” Gavigan said. “There is a toxic reality out there. We check things down to the parts per million here.” Gavigan pointed to a series of upstairs rooms where employees field calls, noting that he and Alba get lots of opinions and requests from Honest users. “If they like it, they’ll tell you; and if they don’t, they’ll let you know,” he said. Now that the company has introduced a line of nursery items including cribs, in collaboration with various designers, Gavigan noted that he and Alba continue to try to solve needs that arise as they parent. So what’s next? “Organic deodorant that actually works,” said Gavigan.
