Scene and Heard: Irene Neuwirth

“It wasn’t exactly something I thought about doing, but I had the best time,” said Irene Neuwirth describing the origins of her eponymous new scent created in collaboration with Barneys New York that was unveiled at a launch party held in Venice on Tuesday, February 4. “I found the process to be so inspiring and so interesting,” the fine jewelry designer added. The perfume is part of the department store’s Designer Fragrance collection, a line of limited edition scents that launched with L’Wren Scott and also includes a version by L.A.-based fashion designer Greg Lauren. Like Scott and Lauren, Neuwirth collaborated with perfumer Ralf Schwieger to create the signature fragrance. “Ralf was incredible. You can give him an idea of what you want it to smell like, and he mixes all of these notes that you would never think of to create the emotion and feeling,” Neuwirth said.

The notes—neroli, rose, orange blossom, and jasmine sambac—pay homage to Neuwirth’s coastal upbringing and years spent in Malibu and Venice. “Who knew rose, coconut, orange blossom and jasmine would smell salty and just like my childhood?” she quipped. Neuwirth has long sought inspiration from elements of the ocean to create jewelry from intensely colored gemstones, so it seemed fitting that she tapped into her memories of local beaches for her first foray into beauty. “If my jewelry had a scent, it would be this,” she said.
