Perfect Pairing: Shopbop + Born Free
Now that spring is here, Shopbop has hatched a chic new program allowing kids to mimic their mother’s style and to support a charitable cause in the process. The online retailer has partnered with nonprofit organization Born Free and 22 top designers who are also mothers—including California native Rachel Roy, as well as Diane von Furstenberg, Vera Wang, Stella McCartney and Miuccia Prada—to create a collection of looks for women and children that will support the initiative’s efforts to eliminate mother-to-child HIV transmission in Africa. John Megrue of the Apax Foundation spearheaded the Born Free initiative in 2001, with the goal of eliminating the health issue by 2016. Now he’s turning to fashion to help raise awareness and funds along with help from the M.A.C. Aids Fund—an organization dedicated to confronting the HIV and AIDS epidemic in high-risk areas—that is matching up to $500,000 of the proceeds made through online sales. There are women’s tunic dresses, dolman tops, and pleated skirts, a variety of totes and accessories, along with a colorful lineup of matching children’s separates, and the look of each piece is derived from one of two prints drawn by Brooklyn-based and Kenyan-born artist Wangechi Mutu. In the corresponding campaign shot by Patrick Demarchelier, Sasha Pivovarova and her daughter Mia wear Prada for Born Free, Lily Aldridge and her daughter Dixie wear tunics by Ivanka Trump for Born Free, and Karolina Kurkova and her son Tobin wear looks by Carolina Herrera for Born Free and Alberta Ferretti for Born Free. This team of creatives even managed to make matching chic.
