Perfect Pairing: Prada + Christophe Chemin
The devoted cadre of art world movers who for years have been in thrall of a certain Italian fashion house can literally wear Muccia Prada‘s latest discovery on their sleeves this fall. The designer sent out a collection rife with sailor hats (worn by both men and women who were dressed in pre-fall 2016 looks), that also included shirts made from prints originally rendered as pencil- or pen-and-paper drawings by Berlin-based French artist Christophe Chemin. In turn, Chemin’s four works adapted for the collection reference famous paintings such as “Guernica,” and “La Danse,” films including Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu, news footage of Elvis Presley in his U.S. Army uniform, novels, etchings, sculptures, and even the PlayStation game ARK: Survival Evolved. The designs offer a cultural cornucopia sure to test art and pop culture historians in the same way passages of James Joyce’s Ulysses haunt literary types.
