Perfect Pairing: Charlotte Perriand + Louis Vuitton
San Francisco is having a midcentury moment. Louis Vuitton paid homage to Parisian architect and furniture designer Charlotte Perriand with its spring Icônes collection currently on display in the store windows of the French fashion house’s Union Square boutique. Perriand’s chic, modular aesthetic inspired each look in the spring 2014 capsule collection that preceded Nicolas Ghesquière‘s appointment as the house’s new creative director.
Windows inspired by Perriand’s modular furniture designs—pieces that are still manufactured by Cassina—draw the eye with primary colors and modern shapes. Following her personal philosophy centered on devising functional living spaces, Perriand created interiors designed to be both artistic and adaptable. The bold colors and geometric shapes of Perriand’s designs inspired the patterns and prints used throughout the collection. Electric yellow knits or graphic contrasting hues of blue and orange herald spring while images of Perriand and installations of her work remind viewers of how relevant her vision remains.
