California Beauty: Marc Jacobs Beauty
Marc Jacobs’ fashion metamorphosis is captivating. From his first collection in 1986, cobbled together while he was still a student at Parsons The New School for Design in New York, to his lavish productions for Louis Vuitton in Paris, he’s always managed to incorporate a sense of imperfection. No matter how polished the look, there’s always a touch of bookish whimsy and an element of youth culture. And, while so many fashion personalities have cultivated and honed one look, Jacobs, in recent years, has fearlessly changed his appearance. His trademark professorial sweaters have given way to avant-garde designs by Comme des Garçons. But through it all, Jacobs has retained his love of mousy chic. After all, he’s known for dressing models like Gisele Bündchen as singular plain Janes on the runway. Though he’s just launched a cosmetics line, Marc Jacobs Beauty (exclusively at San Francisco-based Sephora), it seems fitting that he still values irregularity. “I am attracted to all sorts of imperfection,” he says. The new line of 120 products includes lipsticks, foundations for all skin tones, liners, bronzers, shadows, blushes, and nail lacquers, retailing for $18 to $78. And, for the boys, there is lip balm, brow gel and concealer pens. As the prospect of fall looms over the final weeks of summer, Jacobs’ Lash Lifter mascaras, Magic Marc’er eyeliners and Lust for Lacquer lip vinyls are sure to inspire your transformation into the next season.
