Avian plumage inspired Pasadena-based sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy to create the fall 2015 collection for their Rodarte line, shown in New York at Center 548 during fashion week. Migratory birds, in particular, are a fascinating motif for a medium as changeable as fashion, and the sisters explored the notion of city flocks flying to more rural roosts amid a set made up of giant mirrors, pine tree branches, and florescent light tubes. The idea played out in a collection that started with dark leather skirts and pants and embellished dresses that gradually gave way to tan plaid jackets and ethereal white lace blouses. A group of gowns with intricate beading and feather embellishments closed out the collection, and makeup artist James Kaliardos for NARS Cosmetics seemed to riff on that bit of disco-esque glamour to create the beauty look for the presentation. “The makeup is inspired by the idea of a delicate, refined beauty,” he said. “The Swarovski crystal effect on the eye adds depth and shine to the lower lash, and the glossy lip reflects the light.” The bit of sparkle under the eyes of Rodarte’s birds-of-a-feather was enough to make the look take flight, no wings required.
