California Beauty: Rodarte Fall 2014
Pasadena-based sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy have never tried to hide their Star Wars obsession—or any of their other cinematic preoccupations—but rarely has one of their fetishes overtly taken root in their ready-to-wear designs. For the duo’s fall 2014 presentation, the two collaborators on the Rodarte label sent out gowns printed with images of Yoda, C-3PO, Endor, the Death Star, and Luke Skywalker on Tuesday, February 11, during New York Fashion Week. The collection also included shiny jackets, turtlenecks, and peplum tops that inspired makeup artist James Kaliardos for NARS to create sparkling eyes and lips that brought to mind the golden robot in George Lucas’ film franchise. “This is delicate and youthful beauty,” Kaliardos said. “The look is ephemeral and nostalgic, creating a beautiful glow.” The models’ lips, rife with layers of bright metallic luster, also herald a continuation of the ’70s nostalgia that’s preoccupied the fashion flock since David O. Russell’s Academy Award-nominated film American Hustle opened last year.
