California Beauty: Erdem Fall 2015
British fashion designer Erdem Moralioglu, known for his lavish patterns, gave makeup artist Val Garland for NARS Cosmetics a particular challenge with his Erdem fall 2015 collection, shown in London during fashion week. In the show, the intricate jacquards were often reversed and tweeds had a frayed look to them as if a Miss Havisham-type had been wearing them while wandering throughout her estate for the past few years. Erdem was inspired by production designer Robin Brown’s vision of a fictional art collector’s apartment created for Helly Nahmad Gallery’s stand at Frieze Masters in London, and Garland created a makeup look suited to a girl who lives in such an environment. “Think of Visconti, it’s ’60s, it’s odd, it’s Hitchcockian,” Garland said. “She’s an Italian oligarch who’s landed on hard times and has come undone. Her look is all about a brow and a well-defined eye.” Perhaps this character Moralioglu dreamed up slept in her makeup, or perhaps she’s just reapplied it again, but she’s certainly eye-catching.
