Hermès Beverly Hills Reopening Party
“My mother told me the key to an Hermès store is light,” said Axel Dumas, co-CEO of the French fashion house, as he gestured to the central skylight inside Hermès’ newly reworked Beverly Hills boutique on Tuesday, September 3. Indeed, lighting played a staring role in the lavish bash the Dumas family threw on Rodeo Drive where aerial acrobats hovered and twirled against the four-story storefront and—even more prominently—inside the Culver City warehouse the luxury leather goods company converted into a riverside promenade, movie set, bathhouse and library.
Just as the boutique highlights the craftsman of each maison (leather, textiles, jewelry, and the like), the Culver City after-party offered entertainment for all. Roving bands of men in top hats and tails danced by as a jazz trio played beside a motorboat-filled river lit by a full moon. Dancers dressed as synchronized swimmers (wearing Hermès bathing suits and trunks, of course) performed a choreographed routine atop a floor that referenced the mosaic entryway of the Beverly Hills boutique. The room’s azure color palette brought to mind the blue izmir tone used in bathing bags and scarves made specifically for the Los Angeles boutique’s relaunch. And then there was the library room filled with leather chairs, a table covered in cured meats, and Hermès accouterments including the bag Grace Kelly wore during the filming of High Society, Lauren Bacall’s whisky flask, and a custom briefcase that belonged to Sammy Davis Jr. If there had been a torch singer, it would have been the perfect lounge. Except there she was, microphone in hand. Hermès conjured that up, too.
