Sean Penn managed to conjure up a surprise that had his guests cheering like schoolgirls at the third annual Help Haiti Home Gala and Fundraiser on Saturday, January 11, at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills. Host Bryan Lourd welcomed Charlize Theron, Diane Kruger, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, Emma Thompson and her daughter Gaia Wise to the event presented by Giorgio Armani and benefiting Penn’s J/P Haitian Relief Organization. Michael Douglas, Chris Martin, Kevin Bacon, and Chris Hemsworth also turned out to bid on one-of-a-kind artworks by Banksy (Martin won the painting) and Jeff Koons (Anderson Cooper, the evening’s MC, won the sculpture created from Penn’s extensive gun collection), before turning their attention to live entertainment by Haitian singer Anaelle Jean-Pierre and Israeli singer Asaf Avidan. Guests gasped when U2’s The Edge and Bono joined Jean-Pierre as she sang Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Then rousing cheers filled the room as Larry Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. appeared and the band played “I Will Follow,” “Desire,” and “Vertigo.” U2’s surprise appearance marked its first performance as a foursome in four years, orchestrated by Penn and his Haiti charity.
