The heavens opened up as Art of Elysium took over Barker Hanger in Santa Monica for its annual Heaven Gala on Saturday, January 10. Performance artist Marina Abramović masterminded the evening sponsored by Samsung during which Amber Heard was given the Spirit of Elysium award for her work with the nonprofit to help children with illnesses to experience the arts. Abramović conjured up a higher place that was a state of consciousness requiring silencing headphones for guests to wear during the first hour of the benefit. Johnny Depp accompanied Heard, and the couple joined such guests as Zach Braff, Joaquin Phoenix, Minnie Driver, Laura Prepon, Topher Grace, Moby, Usher, Jamie King, and DJ Elijah Wood. Later in the evening, Costume National’s creative director Ennio Capasa presided over the annual fashion show, giving guests a first look at his pre-fall 2015 collection that included a convergence of black and white clothing, echoing Abramović’s vision of heaven as a place where dark and light meet.
