Ed Ruscha and the Great American West Dinner
Toasting the world premiere of artist Ed Ruscha’s namesake exhibition, Ed Ruscha and the Great American West, art luminaries from across the Golden State converged at the de Young museum for a private dinner on Wednesday, July 13. The intimate soiree drew art world heavyweights including Los Angeles MOCA‘s Philippe Vergne and Helen Molesworth, the Gagosian Gallery‘s Mark Francis, Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco curators Julian Cox, Karin Breuer and Martin Chapman, and FAMSF‘s new director, Max Hollein, for an exclusive preview of the 99-piece show alongside the artist and his wife, Danna. The evocative works, which feature Ruscha’s fascination with the American West, were inspired by his journey at the age of 18, driving the iconic Route 66 from his hometown in Oklahoma to Los Angeles. Patrons browsed the debut exhibition, which included highlights such as Standard Station, a color screen print featuring a typical American gas station, and Schwab’s Pharmacy, a 1976 print from “The Sunset Strip” series. Celebrating the artist’s long-term commitment to exploring the American west as both romantic concept and modern reality, this not-to-be missed exhibit runs through October 9.
