Korean artist Young-Il Ahn is pictured here with his painting, “Water SZLB15” (2015), a gift of Susan Baik and Prem Manjooran—the first work of art by a Korean painter active in Los Angeles to enter LACMA’s collection. Due to the transformative experience of once being lost at sea in a small boat on the Pacific Ocean in July, 1983, Young-Il Ahn skillfully and methodically paints portraits of the sea in an array of colors and textures with an unambiguously contemporary aesthetic. Seemingly simple, his practice is meticulous and encourages a meditative state during the creative process as well as in the viewer. Now in his 80s, Young-Il Ahn is achieving widespread recognition in Korea and abroad. #lacma #water #painting #koreanart #youngilahn #regram via @turtleflowyoga
