Happy birthday to artist Noah Purifoy, who would have been 98 today. Born in Alabama in 1917 to sharecropper parents, Purifoy knew firsthand an aesthetic of junk that was contrary to the general perception of the word. “Making something out of nothing,” as his practice is often characterized, would have been part of everyday life in Birmingham before 1950, when Purifoy left for Los Angeles. His works are on view at LACMA through September 27. [Noah Purifoy, Ode to Frank Gehry, installation view at LACMA] #lacma #hbd #NoahPurifoy
