Spotlight: Tadashi Shoji
Girls on film continuously make their way down a runway in Costa Mesa at Tadashi Shoji’s newly redesigned South Coast Plaza flagship boutique. The space, which reopened on Saturday, June 20, includes an array of plasma screens displaying towering images of looped footage from the line’s latest fashion show. The Los Angeles-based eveningwear designer—known for dressing such women as First Lady Michelle Obama and Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer—worked with Santa Monica-based architecture firm (M)Arch on the innovative new interiors. The glass façade and the boutique’s soft cream and pink hues contrast with the lush colors of the Japanese-born designer’s summer and pre-fall ready-to-wear collections. Custom-designed glass panels sit behind the digital wall of screens and are meant to create the effect of backstage dressing rooms at the collections. Here, Shoji gives new meaning to larger-than-life design.
