Women’s underpinnings have sparked conversation, consternation, and even political conflict since Eve first reached for some low-hanging fig leaves. Cher and Madonna wore them with the casual ease of a T-shirt. Sofia Coppola showed that she understood underwear’s allure and complexity when she opened her film, Lost in Translation, with Scarlet Johansson clad in a pair of knickers. Now model Carolyn Murphy has collaborated with London-based Cheekfrills to educate women about naturally-sourced fabric by creating a capsule collection of lingerie made with organic cotton. Murphy designed the 11-piece line of classic briefs, bras, pajamas, chemises, and a robe with Cheekfrills co-founder Katie Canvin for Net-a-Porter. The collaboration launches on Friday, August 14. Each piece is crafted from sustainably-sourced model cotton made from the wood pulp of Austrian beechwood trees and the pale pastels in the line—including subtle pinks, blues and grays—are all organically dyed. Pretty lace lines the undies and there is not a wire to be found. These days, how you wear underwear is less important than the fabric used to craft it. Now that’s progress.
