State of Mind: Curated by C Magazine Pop-Up Debut
“It’s exciting that there’s a space to learn about new and indigenous products from California,” said Alex Israel on Tuesday, November 28, as he surveyed the scene at C’s inaugural pop-up shop, State of Mind: Curated by C Magazine, located inside the newly revamped Westfield Century City. The artist and filmmaker, whose work often shines a spotlight on his hometown of Los Angeles and celebrity culture, added, “C is about my favorite state. I think we have some similar interests and overlap in what we’re looking at and thinking of.”
The store, which runs through January 2, is C’s first foray into retail. Featuring a curated selection of more than 150 designers and artisans, the space (envisioned by interior designer Martha Mulholland) is a showcase for Californian style, including Israel’s line of sunglasses.
“I think it feels fresh. There’s eye candy everywhere,” said makeup artist and jewelry designer Jillian Dempsey, whose namesake cosmetic line was showcased alongside the likes of April Gargiulo’s cult serum Vintner’s Daughter, Shiva Rose, Retrouvé and Strange Invisible Perfumes. “But it’s not overwhelming—it’s laid out so well that you can take your time getting into it.”
Guests including Camilla Belle, Dita Von Teese, Garance Doré, and Aimee Song browsed the curated selection of goods, rubbing shoulders with many of the designers whose pieces were on display, including Co Collection’s Stephanie Danan and Justin Kern, milliner Nick Fouquet, artist and designer Sarah-Jane Wilde, jeweler Tara Hirshberg, Brock Collection’s Kristopher Brock and Laura Vassar Brock, Valerie Gordon of Valerie Confections and wine purveyor Helen Johannesen of Helen’s Wines.
“It feels very family oriented,” said Eric Buterbaugh, whose botanical perfumes and candles lined the shelves. “There’s plenty I want to buy, but I’m looking at Nick’s hats. I already see two that I’m just jonesing over.” Kristopher Brock, meanwhile, had his eye on a skateboard by Elisabeth Weinstock, one of the designer’s many exotic skin-covered pieces on display.
Following cocktails and shopping, guests made their way to a private space in the outdoor courtyard and took their seats for a dinner prepared by Jennifer Naylor Catering. Linens by Heather Taylor Home (also available for purchase in store), and place settings from Casa de Perrin adorned the table, bedecked in Buterbaugh’s sensational blooms.
“It’s incredible to gather all of these amazing California designers in one place to celebrate them and their work,” said host Jennifer Smith Hale, founder, CEO and editorial director of C.
“I’m flattered to be a part of the curation that includes the best of California,” said shoe designer and stylist Maryam Malakpour, one half of the sister duo behind Newbark. “It means more than anything to be recognized as a fundamental brand that is representing California. We’re very grateful for that.”
