On Wednesday, April 18, select members of Los Angeles’ art society flocked to the hillside overlooking Malibu to celebrate the opening of “Plato in L.A.: Contemporary Artists’ Visions” at the Getty Villa.

Among those who arrived at the Outer Peristyle Garden were artists whose works comprise the Platonic exhibit, including Paul Chan, Rachel Harrison, Jeff Koons, Joseph Kosuth, Paul McCarthy and Whitney McVeigh. Notables such as Ricky Martin, Michael Chow and Honor Fraser were also in attendance.

During the alfresco dinner—which culminated with an artful, layered chocolate dessert—the partygoers toasted to remarks from J. Paul Getty Museum director Timothy Potts, and Donatien Grau, the guest curator of the exhibition.

The show boasts sculptures, paintings, drawings and large-scale installations that explore the Greek philosopher’s impact on the contemporary world, and marks the first time that international artists Huang Yong Ping and Michelangelo Pistoletto have had their works shown in Los Angeles. Through September 3. 1200 Getty Center Dr., Ste. 403, L.A.; 310-440-7360.
