It was a star-filled evening celebrating amFAR‘s seventh annual Inspiration Gala in L.A. on Thursday, October 28. The event paid tribute to Dreamworks Chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg as well as actor and UN Messenger of Peace Charlize Theron, recognizing each of them for their exceptional contributions to the fight against AIDS. After a Disney-themed musical tribute to Katzenberg by Glee stars and a 10-piece orchestra, longtime amFAR supporter Heidi Klum took the stage to welcome guests like David Foster, “girlboss” Sophia Amoruso, Courtney Love and actors John Hamm and Lea Michelle, and introduce amFAR’s Chairman of the Board Kenneth Cole. Chelsea Handler presented the award to Theron, who she remarked was “uncompromising—because in the fight against aids we need uncompromising.” Guests learned about amFAR’s Countdown to a Cure for Aids initiative, which is aimed at developing the scientific basis for a cure by the year 2020. Following the moving presentations, a live auction chock-full of covetable prizes ensued—from tickets to Givenchy’s Paris Fashion Week show to dazzling Harry Winston earrings (the jeweler was the night’s sponsor along with MAC Cosmetics). Jason Derulo took the stage to perform familiar hits as attendees danced below, ending the night—which raised over $2 million for amfAR’s life-saving AIDS research programs—with a bang.
